Get Your Science On: Levitating Magnets

In Everyday Science, Shopcasts and Videos

Katie shows us how to make our magnets levitate.

What’s Going On

Magnets have two poles, north and south. Like poles repel each other, so we have the north pole of one magnet facing the north pole of another, and the south pole of one magnet facing the south pole of another. The magnets repel so strongly that the top two float above the bottom magnet!

Materials

Magnets (we used two large ceramic magnets)
Dowel or rod for the magnets to go around
Stand for the rod (optional)

How to Build

Place the magnets on the rod, ensuring that they have the same poles facing each other so that they repel. Get your science on!
