Get Your Science On: Big Ears

In Get Your Science On, Shopcasts and Videos

This week Katie shows us how to build Big Ears. This experiment makes it so you can hear sounds very well, but only in the direction the headphones are pointing.

Materials

Noise reduction ear muffs (with foam lining)
2 funnels
PVC 90 elbow

How to Build It

Carefully drill out a hole in each of the ear muffs. Using tape or glue (or both!), attach the funnels to the ear muffs with the PVC elbow pieces.

What’s going On?

The funnels have a larger surface area than your ear lobes, which allow you to funnel more sound into your ears. They are also directional, so sound can only come in from one direction. This allows you to easily tell where sound is coming from.
