About the Little Shop of Physics

The Little Shop of Physics is a group of science educators and science students at Colorado State University. We don’t show students science; we help them do science. Our goal is to teach people that science is something anyone can do.

The mission of the Little Shop of Physics is to:

  • Find creative ways to share the wonder of science.
  • Present a unique hands-on science experience to a diverse range of students.
  • Involve undergraduates in significant and meaningful service.
  • Share ideas and insights with current and future teachers.

Each year, the LSOP delivers our Traveling Science Experience to 15+ schools, involving thousands of K-12 students while exposing them to STEM career paths and opportunities. Hallmarks of the LSOP approach:

  • All instruction is hands-on, learner-directed, and fits across ethnicities and genders.
  • All materials are designed with education standards and best teaching practices in mind.
  • K-12 programs are presented by college students.

Who We Are

The Little Shop of Physics has 4 professional staff members, but the most important players on the LSOP team are the student interns. CSU undergraduate student-interns are the heart, soul, and muscle behind the LSOP. Everything that the LSOP does is designed and presented by undergraduate CSU students. The LSOP interns work together as a team to create an accessible, engaging, and fun science experience for K-12 students.

What Interns Do

Little Shop interns spend Tuesdays in the shop on CSU campus, working on projects, then spend Thursdays taking the program on the road. There are occasional evening and weekend events as well.

What Do We Need

We need 2-3 undergraduate students who fit the above profile. You must be free to work with us on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuesday classes are OK – we can schedule your work around them – but we strongly prefer applicants who can free all day on Thursdays most weeks of the semester. Work-study is preferred but not required. This internship is available to all majors; you just need to like science and like working with children.

Work-study is preferred. There are also opportunities for unpaid internships.

What Do We Offer

Working with the Little Shop is a great chance to be creative, to work with a wonderful group of people, to travel, to be a role model to younger kids, and to learn some science concepts in depth.  It’s a chance to learn and grow while giving something back, and it’s a great springboard to many other opportunities on campus and beyond.

How Do I Apply?

If you are interested in applying, please submit a letter of application, a resume, and a list of three references to the Little Shop of Physics. Electronic submissions are preferred; you may apply through Student Employment Services or send materials to littleshopofphysics@gmail.com. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask any member of the Little Shop.
